What is an Air Force firefighter?

An Air Force firefighter is an enlisted U.S. Air Force member who chose to pursue the fire protection specialty after completing basic training. Fire protection specialists are typically stationed on Air Force bases and can be called on to assist local fire departments.

After finishing basic military training, a candidate for fire protection must attend the Air Force's school for fire protection at Goodfellow Air Force Base in Texas. Students attend class for 68 days to earn a 23-credit-hour college degree in fire science. Fire protection specialists become Red Cross certified, train in CPR, learn to use fire equipment and deal with all types of structure, aircraft and vehicle fires.
