As of 2014, London Heathrow is the biggest airport in Europe, based on passenger volume. In 2013, 72 million air travelers passed through Heathrow, an increase of 3.3 percent from the previous year. The second largest airport in Europe is Charles de Gaulle in Paris.
There are 76,000 people employed in various jobs throughout London Heathrow, as of 2014. Each day, more than 200,000 bags are put through the security scanners. The airport covers an area of 4.6 square miles and has five main civilian terminals. There is a small sixth terminal, but it is only used for royalty, heads of state and some celebrities when the occasion demands.
