The Alaska Department of Fish and Game identifies the Kodiak bear as the largest kind of bear in the world. Kodiaks are a type of brown or grizzly bear found only on islands in the state's Kodiak Archipelago.

Male Kodiaks, or boars, are over 10 feet tall when standing. When walking on all fours, a boar is half that height. Males reach weights of 1,500 pounds. Females, or sows, are about four-fifths the height and two-thirds the weight of boars. No other types of bears have been in contact with Kodiaks for over 12,000 years. The islands are home to about 3,500 bears, with a ratio of slightly less than one bear per square mile.
