The polar bear is considered by most experts to be the largest species of bear in the world. Males can reach weights of over 1,500 pounds, with the largest polar bear on record weighing over 2,200 pounds.
Male polar bears also reach lengths of over 8 feet long. Females are usually half of the male's size.
Polar bears are a carnivorous species that lives mainly within the Arctic Circle and the surrounding ocean. Its preferred habitat is the sea ice that forms annually over the continental shelf and surrounding islands. They typically stay close to spots where the ice meets the ocean in order to hunt their favored prey, which is seal.
