What is Alpine skiing?

There are a wide array of alpine skiing disciplines. Alpine skiing is a form of skiing derived from the technique used to slide down mountainous terrain near the tree lines.
Alpine equipment consists of two skis and bindings on the heal of each ski that secure the boot. The most common forms of alpine skiing are downhill, slalom, giant slalom, super giant slalom and the super combined slalom. Athletes compete in each of these events during the Winter Olympics. Early alpine slalom races formed in the 1920s, and they first appeared as an Olympic event in 1936 at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen games.
