Why was the AMC show "Hell on Wheels" canceled?

AMC did not give a reason for canceling "Hell on Wheels," a popular western drama slated to air its final episodes in the summer of 2016. During its six-season run, the Emmy-nominated show was among the most popular for AMC, which is why the announcement about its cancellation stumped fans.

The show is set in the 1860s and centers on former slaveholder and soldier Cullen Bohannon, who seeks revenge for the murder of his wife. Along the way, he becomes involved with effort to bring the railroad from the east into the west. The drama stars Anson Mount as Cullen and features supporting actors Colm Meaney, Phil Burke, Robin McLeavy and Dohn Dorwood.
