What amendment gave women the right to vote?

The 19th amendment to the U.S. Constitution gave women the right to vote. The amendment states that "the right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex."

This amendment was first introduced in Congress in 1878, but it was rejected. Another vote failed in 1914. Further attempts in 1918 and early 1919 to pass the amendment also failed, but a final vote in June 1919 led to the amendment's passage by Congress. The 19th amendment was ratified by three-fourths of the states when Tennessee became the 36th state to approve it on August 18, 1920. It was eventually ratified by all states, with Mississippi being the last in 1984.
