What is amlodipine?

According to Drugs.com, amlodipine is a drug classified as a calcium channel blocker. Its main effect is to improve blood flow by relaxing the walls of blood vessels. It is used for treating chest pain and high blood pressure in adults and children over the age of 6.
Drugs.com adds that possible serious side effects of amlodipine include feelings that one is about to pass out; swelling of the hands, ankles or feet; chest pain; throbbing heartbeat; nausea; and sweating. Patients are advised to call their doctor immediately when experiencing these side effects. Less serious secondary reactions of this drug include tiredness, headaches, drowsiness, dizziness and flushing.
