Amox/K Clav is a combination antibiotic consisting of amoxicillin trihydrate and potassium clavulanate. The combination results in an antibiotic with an increased spectrum of action against a number of bacterial infections, and restored efficiency against amoxicillin-resistant bacteria.
Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic, which works against a broad range of bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis in the bacterial organism. According to RX List, bacteria can develop resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics by producing beta-lactamase, an enzyme that attacks the drug's chemical structure.
Potassium clavulanate is a beta-lactamase inhibitor, which acts against beta-lactamase enzymes. Amox/K Clav is often prescribed for urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections and infections caused by the bacterial flora of the mouth.
