Marsupials are animals that carry their young in a pouch. Examples of marsupials include kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, Tasmanian devils, wombats and opossums. Marsupials have short pregnancies and give live birth to embryos that further develop in the pouch.
Opossums remain pregnant for only 13 days before delivering their embryos. The red kangaroo has a gestational period of 30 days and weighs 1 gram when it is delivered. Marsupials are mammals and are covered in fur.
The opossum is the only naturally occurring marsupial in the United States. Marsupials are most prevalent in Australia and South America. Australia has over 120 species of marsupials.
