What are antique corkscrews?

An antique corkscrew is a mechanical device that dates from long ago and is designed to remove corks from bottles, including beer, wine and medicine bottles. One end has a spiral metal bar with a sharp tip, and the other end has a transverse handle.

The invention of the corkscrew was inspired by a tool called a "gun worm" or "bulletscrew" that was commonly used to remove stuck bullets from rifles. The first corkscrew patent was granted in England to Samuel Henshall on August 24, 1795. The second patent was granted in France to Francois Rever on February 23, 1828.
