AOL is the shortened form of America Online, which is the company's full name. As of 2009, the company rebranded themselves as "Aol," rather than using the capitalized form.
AOL was founded in the early 1980s to provide an online service for the Atari 2600 and later the Commodore 64 and 128 consoles. The company switched to providing services for the PC in 1988, along with changing the company name to AOL. As well as being an Internet service provider, AOL is a global mass media company that helps to grow and develop brands. The company is currently based in New York.
