One of the first signs of appendicitis is pain near the navel, according to MedlinePlus. As the condition worsens, the pain becomes more severe. It usually manifests into sharp pain in the lower right abdomen. The pain usually becomes severe 12 to 24 hours after the onset of the disease.

Nausea, loss of appetite and vomiting are also signs of appendicitis, notes Mayo Clinic. Fever and abdominal bloating might also occur. Appendicitis is caused by a blockage of the appendix. This might be caused by a tumor, feces or a foreign object. The condition often requires emergency surgery to remove the appendix. If the appendix ruptures, infection might occur without prompt treatment.
