The home appliances that use the most electricity are washing machines and dryers, refrigerators, freezers, electric ovens, microwaves ovens, the home computer, TVs and dishwashers. Refrigerators consume the most electricity at just over 1,000 kilowatt hours per year. Individuals who have pool pumps and home spas will find that these items consume even more electricity than a refrigerator.

The refrigerator and washer/dryer are also more expensive consumers of electricity, costing about $80 to $90 annually. Energy Star appliances famously consume less electricity, and consequently have lower annual costs. On average, most U.S. households utilize 11,000 kilowatt hours each year, which costs about $900.
