When do you apply for Medicare if you work past 65?

Individuals who have workplace health insurance after the age of 65 can delay signing up for Medicare Part B to avoid that plan's monthly premiums, advises the American Association of Retired Persons. However, those same people should register for Part A because it doesn't require a monthly premium.

These recommendations also apply to husbands and wives who are covered through their partners' workplace insurance, AARP notes. While Medicare doesn't require older employees to sign up for Part B, companies that have fewer than 20 employees can require eligible workers to register for Medicare. Once older employees leave their jobs, they have up to eight months to register for Part B.
