What does an Army combat engineer do?

The primary job of U.S. Army Combat Engineers is to supervise, serve or assist as a member of unit when tackling rough terrain in combat situations. Combat Engineers are experts in general engineering, mobility, countermobility and survivability.

Some of the duties Combat Engineers perform are the construction of fighting positions, fixed or floating bridges, defensive positions, and obstacles. They also conduct route clearance of rivers and obstacles and are responsible for detecting mines and other explosives. Placing and detonating explosives is also a task performed by Combat Engineers. Job training for Combat Engineers lasts 14 weeks and consists of Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training. To qualify for this position, recruits must obtain an ASVAB Combat score of at least 87.
