What is the Army Corp of Engineers?

The United States Army Corp of Engineers is a division of the United States Army tasked with developing and sustaining infrastructure and facilities in both the public and military sectors. Approximately 37,000 civilian and military personnel make up the Corp of Engineers.
The mission of the Corp of Engineers includes strengthening national security, bolstering the economy and preventing and lessening the hazards of natural disasters. As much as 27 percent of all hydropower in the United States is the result of the Core of Engineers' public works. The Corp traces its roots back to 1775 when Colonel Richard Gridley was named chief engineer under General George Washington.
