The most famous work of the Renaissance artist Raphael is actually a portion of a larger work: the Sistine Madonna. The two bored cherubim at the bottom of the painting have been reproduced on T-shirts and many other consumer items.
Born Rafaello Sanzio da Urbani in Urbino, Italy, in 1493, he painted a series of Madonnas while living in Florence between 1504 and 1507, which built his reputation. The Madonnas are praised for their structural soundness, balance and harmonious arrangement. He rose to fame after being commissioned to paint the walls of a room in the Vatican in 1508.
