As of February 2015, Diego Rivera's most famous painting is a fresco mural titled "Detroit Industry." It is located on the walls of the Detroit Institute of Arts in Detroit, Michigan.
Henry Ford commissioned the mural in 1932 as a tribute to Detroit's manufacturing and labor force. Rivera chose the car plant workers of Detroit as the focus of the piece, which he completed in 1933 after 11 months of work.
Although "Detroit Industry" stands as Rivera's most famous painting and as one of the finest examples of Mexican mural art in the U.S., it was surrounded by controversy after its completion due to Rivera's communist political beliefs.
