The first edition of "Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution," which was written by Dr. Robert C. Atkins, came out in 1972. In this book, as well as subsequent books, the famed cardiologist touts low-carb diets as a way to manage medical conditions.
The Atkins Diet is said to help regulate blood sugar, improve cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The diet consists of four phases: induction, ongoing weight loss, pre-maintenance and lifetime maintenance. The first phase is very restrictive, but many of the foods forbidden in the initial phase of the Atkins Diet are reintroduced in the subsequent phases of the program.
