As of 2015, the national average composite ACT score is 21 out of 36, according to ACT.org. The two states with the highest average ACT scores are Massachusetts and Connecticut, with a score of 24.4. The state with the lowest average score is Hawaii, with a score of 18.5.

The ACT is a national college admissions test with four sections: reading, science, math and English. It can be taken with an optional writing section in addition to the other subjects. ACT originally stood for American College Testing, and the organization was founded in 1959. In 1996, the organization officially shortened its name to the acronym ACT.
