What is the average American family income?

In 2014, the median American family income was $53,657. This is slightly less than the 2013 average, which was $54,462, as reported by the U.S. Census Bureau.

American incomes are stagnant and have remained this way for several years. Since 2007, women's incomes have remained flat while men have seen a slight decline in their income. Among whites, income has fallen nearly two percent. There is no significant difference in the incomes of African-Americans, Asian-Americans and Hispanic.

Various reasons for income stagnation include technological change and the diminishing power of labor unions. Additionally, since 1980 the distribution of income has grown increasingly unequal.
