According to a research study by Experian, the average American family owns 2.28 vehicles. Single-vehicle households comprise 34 percent of all households, two-vehicle households comprise 31 percent of all households and households with three or more vehicles comprise nearly 35 percent of all households.
The number of vehicles owned per household varies based on geographic region. For example, Washington D.C. has the highest percentage of single-vehicle households, while South Dakota has the highest percentage of households with five or more cars. It is as likely for a household earning $250,000 or more to own a single car as a household earning between $25,000 to $34,999.
