The Californian Centre for Public Health Advocacy reports that the average American drinks approximately 50 gallons of soda per year, which is equivalent to about two standard cans per day. Fifty gallons of soda contain 39 pounds of sugar.
Soda and sugary drinks are the largest source of added sugar to the American diet. Each day, the average American consumes 22 teaspoons of sugar; the recommended daily intake is 5 to 9 teaspoons. Children who drink one or more sodas per day are 55 percent more likely to be obese. A diet with a high sugar intake can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease, weight management issues and dental problems.
