The average home construction cost per square foot varies by state; for example, in Georgia, the average cost is $89.03 per square foot, while in California, the average cost is $148.84 per square foot, as of 2015. Home-Cost.com offers a search tool showing the cost per square foot by state.

To use the tool, enter a U.S. ZIP code or choose a state from the drop-down menu, and then click Submit. The tool also shows the average new home square footage. For instance, the average new home in California is 2,400 square feet. When calculating the average square footage, the tool only calculates livable square footage; it does not factor in the square footage of garages, basements and other bonus spaces.
