What is the cost per square foot to build a home?

The National Association of Home Builders reports that, in 2013, the average home in the United States was 2,607 square feet and cost $246,453 to build. The cost per square foot was approximately $94.53.

The average home size increased by about 300 square feet between 2011 and 2013, although lot size declined slightly during the same period, according to NAHB. Home costs and the share of sales prices covering construction costs also went up.

NAHB gathers its data through periodic questionnaires sent to a representative sample of home construction professionals. The survey breaks down costs to include site work, framing, foundations and finishes, and other elements.
