According to its May 2014 data, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that registered nurses earn an average annual salary of $69,790. This annual salary equates to an hourly wage of $33.55.

In general medical and surgical hospitals, the largest employment sector, the average income for RNs is $71,640. Among other top employment sectors, physicians offices provide average pay of $63,800 per year. Home health care RNs make an average of $67,880 per year. California has the highest annual income for RNs among states and territories, with pay at $98,400 per year. Hawaii is the next-highest at $88,230, followed by Massachusetts at $85,770 per year.
