What are the average rates for U.S. savings bonds?

As of August 2015, the average interest rates on series HH U.S. savings bonds is 1.5 percent, according to SavingsBonds.com. Series EE savings bonds pay 0.30 percent in the same time period.

The U.S. Treasury Department announces new fixed interest rates on series EE savings bonds on the first of May and the first of October of each year, explains Treasury Direct. Other types of savings bonds include series E bonds that pay between 3.98 to 6 percent if they were purchased between Nov. 1, 2014 and Apr. 30, 2015. The series I bond pays 1.94 percent if purchased between the same dates as series E bonds, and the series I variable-rate bond pays 1.84 percent.
