As of 2015, the yearly salary for a U.S. senator is $174,000. Senate leaders, including the majority and minority leaders and the president pro tempore, receive a higher salary than other members. Leaders currently earn $193,400 per year.
In addition to a yearly salary, each Senator has comprehensive health and retirement benefits. Senators are vested after five years of service.
In order to control congressional salaries, the United States added a 27th amendment to the Constitution, prohibiting current members of Congress from granting themselves pay raises. The last pay increase took place in 2009, raising the senatorial salary from $169,300 per year to the current rate.
