A steel channel with a depth of 15 inches may have a width of 3.716, a thickness of .716 and a sectional area of 14.7 inches. Alternately, a 15-inch deep steel channel may have a width of 3.4, a thickness of .4 and a sectional area of 9.96 inches.
Multiple dimensions are possible for each depth specification of a particular steel channel. For example, four different sets of dimensions are common for steel channels with a depth of 10 inches. These may feature a width of 3.033, 2.886, 2.739 or 2.6 inches and a thickness of .673, .526, .379 or .240 inches. Each of these dimension sets also carries a different weight rating in pounds-per-foot.
