The base is located about 700 miles from the Arctic Circle and 950 miles from the North Pole. It is also the halfway mark between Washington, D.C., and Moscow, which is why is was built by the United States Air Force during World War II. During the Cold War, it was a line of defense against incoming Soviet planes and a refueling stop for U.S. planes headed to Russia.
