Avocado is actually a terrific food for diabetics. While it is fairly high in calories and fat, particularly for a vegetable, the fats are the healthy Omega-3 variety, according to About.com.
One whole avocado has an average of 320 calories, 29.5 grams of fat and 17.1 grams of carbohydrates. However, the high fiber content keeps the carbs from ramping up one's glycemic index. The omega-3 fatty acids build the "good" (HDL) type of cholesterol. Avocados are also full of folate and vitamins C and K. Adding avocado to one's diet boosts flavor to salads or to baby carrots that one can dip into guacamole.
