How is honey bad for diabetics?

Honey in excessive portions is bad for diabetics because it adversely affects blood sugar levels, according to M. Regina Castro, M.D., for WebMD. Honey also has more carbohydrates and calories than sugar.
Honey is sweeter than sugar, so a smaller amount of honey can go a longer way than an equivalent amount of sugar, says WebMD. Using honey instead of sugar is generally fine in a diabetes eating plan, but the carbohydrates in the honey must be counted.
Honey has fructose as its main sweetener, and consuming more than 50 grams of fructose daily can raise a person's blood sugar, claims Dr. Asquel Getaneh for Everyday Health. The key is to consume honey in moderation.
