What is a baby penguin called?

A baby penguin is called a chick. Most chicks are born in colder climates. However, chicks of species such as the Magellanic penguin are born in more temperate or even hot climates.

Chicks are usually cared for by both parents. Chicks of emperor penguins gather together in groups known as creches.

Many penguins form large colonies during the breeding season and lay their eggs in burrows or build nests. However, the male emperor penguin keeps the egg in his brood pouch, while the female returns to the sea to eat. When she returns, she takes over the job of raising the chick while he goes to feed.
