What is a baritone saxophone?

The baritone saxophone is a member of the woodwind family of musical instruments and is the second biggest type of saxophone. It produces deep sounds and plays one octave lower than an alto saxophone.

Unlike the saxophones that play in higher keys, the baritone has a looped neck. Like the others, it is made of a cylindrical tube of brass that forms a bell shape on one end and has a smaller side with round keys and a reed mouthpiece on the other.

Adolphe Sax invented saxophones, including this variety, in 1840. The baritone saxophone is typically found in jazz and concert bands and is also historically common in army bands.
