According to the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, the habitats of wild bearded dragons do not offer much food, so they eat both plants and animals. They are omnivores, eating whatever food is available.
In the wild, bearded dragons live in Australia. Their habitats include desert, shore areas and scrub lands. Food is not plentiful, so, when food is available, the dragons are able to eat a great deal because they have large stomachs. Typical prey include insects and spiders, but bearded dragons sometimes consume small rodents or lizards. Plants make up about one-fifth of a dragon's total diet. In captivity, the animals receive meals of crickets and salad every few days.
