Proper makeup blending is the key to getting smoky eyes. This stylish look can be achieved using primer, eyeshadow, an eyeshadow brush, eyeliner and mascara. It is a moderately difficult makeup style, and it takes around 10 minutes to complete.
Prime the eyelids
Adding primer to the eyelids is necessary so that skin oils and sweat do not cause the makeup to run. Swipe it across the eye, and then allow it to dry.
Apply eyeliner above the upper lash line
Choose a color from the same family as your desired end result. Make the line thicker in the middle of the eye. For a jewel-toned smoky eye, use a deep green, purple or blue eyeliner.
Blend the bottom
Using a finger, smudge the color on the bottom eyelashes. About.com recommends using an eyeliner pencil for easier smudging. For a full smudge effect, add a small amount of eyeshadow.
Add a lightly colored base
It is important to pair a light base with a darker color. Gently apply a lighter base over the eyelids, stopping at the brow bone.
Blend a darker color below the crease
Use an eyeshadow brush to blend a darker hue, starting at the lash line and blending upward. Blend color into the lash line to make the eyeliner vanish.
Compare eyes
Make sure that the makeup is applied evenly and symmetrically.
Add mascara
For dark, thick eyelashes, add a couple of coats of mascara. The eyelashes can also be curled, if desired.
