Creating a smoky eyes effect involves layering shades of makeup and blending them together. Traditionally, the darkest shade goes on first, near the lash line, the medium shade on the main part of the lid and the lightest shade on the brow bone.

A neutral layer goes first all over the lid and brow bone area, followed by a dark, easy to smudge liner or eye shadow by the lash line.
