What is a Mexican tattoo?

Mexican tattoos include a range of body art with a Mexican theme. Some examples include images of the Mexican flag, designs that feature Aztec or Mayan art, as well as depictions of traditional Mexican symbols such as sombreros.
In the ancient Aztec culture, people were tattooed to show social rank, or to display a warrior's accomplishments. As a result, many Mexican tattoos are often inspired by traditional Aztec and Mayan art and religion. Symbols, designs and depictions of gods are common. Christian, specifically Catholic, body art is also popular. Frequent tattoos include the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, portraits of the Virgin Mary or images of a rosary.
