Are bed bugs harmful to people?

While the itching from bed bug bites is annoying, bed bugs do not spread disease and are not considered harmful, unless a person is allergic to bed bug bites. People who scratch bed bug bites too aggressively may develop a skin infection, states the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
People who wake up with bite marks on the hands, arms, neck, face or elsewhere on the body after sleeping likely have bed bugs. Other signs of an infestation include the small exoskeletons that bed bugs shed after molting, blood spots on the mattress or linens, and a musty, sweet smell, as stated by the CDC.
