Are Tums harmful to dogs?

Antacids, such as Tums, can be given to dogs to treat symptoms of heartburn, acid reflux and ulcers, and are not generally harmful if given occasionally. Long-term regular use may damage the kidneys.
Acid reflux and heartburn are fairly common in dogs. Symptoms include frequent regurgitation, loss of appetite and weight loss. Antacids, such as Tums, can treat occasional episodes of heartburn. For frequent or chronic acid reflux, medications, such as Zantac, Pepcid AC and Tagamet, tend to be more effective. Pepto-Bismol can also be given to dogs that have occasional episodes of heartburn or stomach upset at a dose of 1 teaspoon for every 20 pounds of dog.
