Are begonias annuals or perennials?

Begonias are perennials in tropical climates, but are killed by frost in areas that are colder. They can be moved indoors and protected from cold weather for year-round enjoyment.

Begonias thrive in temperatures ranging from 70 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit. Many varieties go dormant in the fall only to return to full bloom in the spring. Others bloom throughout the year. Temperatures below 32 degrees Fahrenheit kill the roots of the plant. Root systems vary depending upon the type of begonia, but all are vulnerable to cold. Some grow from a root ball, while others originate from rhizomes, tubers or sprouts.
