Is sage an annual or perennial?

Sage is a perennial plant according to About.com's Herb Gardens expert. It is able to survive harsh winters and grow for many years. Sage is available in several different varieties.

Sage grows well in USDA Hardiness Zones of five through nine. It blooms in midsummer with purple and blue flowers. Most plants will grow up to 2 feet high and 3 feet wide. Sage should be placed in a full sun location for best growing results. The sage should not be harvested in the plant's first year to allow the plant time to become established. Harvesting begins in the second year of growth.
