Bessie Coleman was the first African-American woman to earn a pilot's license. She got her license in France because American flight schools refused her entry. In 1922, she earned the license at the Caudron Brother's School of Aviation in seven months.

She became famous for her stunt flying and aerial tricks. She made the first public flight by an African-American woman in 1922. Her dream of wanting to become a pilot started in 1915 when she listened to and read stories of World War I pilots. She died during a rehearsal for a flight show at the age of 34 in 1926.
