Betamethasone cream is used to treat the swelling, itching and redness that may accompany eczema, dermatitis, allergies, rash and other skin conditions, explains WebMD. The medium-strength corticosteroid works by depressing the formation and activity of cells and chemicals that trigger irritation, explains Drugs.com.
Patients should apply and gently rub a thin film of betamethasone to the affected area one to three times daily for relief, explains WebMD. Patients must not use the topical cream on the face, groin or underarm regions. Patients are discouraged from using the medication for longer than two weeks, unless directed by their doctor, and should not bandage or cover the area.
