The population of Toronto was approximately 2,808,503 people at the end of 2014, making it the fourth largest city in North America after Mexico City, New York and Los Angeles. Officials expect the population to reach 3.4 million people by 2041.
As of 2015, the population of Toronto's greater metropolitan area is 5.6 million people. This population growth represents a reversal of a trend that saw the city’s population decreasing annually by 75,000 people a decade earlier. Much of the increase in population is due to an influx of immigration. Roughly half of the city’s population is foreign-born, as indicated by a 2011 survey conducted by Statistics Canada.
