Syria has a geographical area of approximately 71,498 square miles. This geographical area includes the contested region of Golan Heights, which was annexed by Israel on Dec. 14, 1981. The region had previously been captured by Israel in 1967.
Syria has a land boundary that measures 1,400 miles and is bordered by Turkey, Iraq, Jordan, Israel and Lebanon. Syria's coastline extends 120 miles and borders the Mediterranean Sea to the west. As of 2014, approximately 75 percent of Syria is classified as a semiarid steppe zone. Only 28 percent of the country's land is arable. The highest point inside Syria is Mount Hermon, which stands at its border with Lebanon.
