Vatican City is about 100 acres, making it the smallest independent state in the world. It is about one-eighth the size of New York's Central Park. The Italian border surrounding the Vatican is two miles long.

Fifty-seven acres of Vatican City consist of gardens that rest upon an area known as Vatican Hill. Despite its relatively small size, the Vatican performs most of the typical functions of any country. The Pope is considered the ruling monarch. The independent state prints its own euros as a member of the European Union. It performs other government activities, such as issuing passports and driver's licenses.
