The world's largest shrimp can grow to nearly 16 inches long. It is the zebra mantis shrimp, or the striped mantis shrimp. These shrimp live in the bottoms of reefs in the Indian and Pacific Oceans from Hawaii to East Africa and off the Galapagos Islands.
The zebra mantis shrimp?s name stems from its stripes, which range in color from cream to dark brown. They are part of the family of mantis shrimp, which get its name from the way the shrimp hold their front claws. Zebra mantis shrimp live in monogamous pairs, and because females rarely leave their burrows, it is males who hunt for crabs, fish and other shrimp.
