The biggest river in India is the Ganges, with a length of 2,525 kilometers from source to mouth. The Ganges has its source in the Himalayas and empties into the Bay of Bengal. It flows eastwards towards the state of West Bengal.

The ancient name of the Ganges is the Bhagirathi, and its source lies in the Gangotri glacier. This glacier lies in the region called Uttar Kashi. The Ganges is joined by one of its biggest tributaries, the Yamuna RiverIn, in the plains of the Indian subcontinent.

The Ganges is worshipped by the Hindus. It is mentioned in ancient Hindu religious scriptures. Banaras, one of the holiest Hindu cities, is located on the banks of the Ganges.
